In the Spotlight: A Better Measure of Success

Everyone wants to be considered a winner. Athletes, teams, coaches, and schools that achieve a sparkling win-loss record season after season are typically perceived as such. Conversely, no one desires the dreaded experience of losing competition after competition or the ramifications of it.

The prevailing position of most sport psychologists and thoughtful observers is that winning too much or losing too much shortchanges athletes (and coaches) of the full spectrum of experiences and emotions that make sports special. Those who believe sport can provide lessons for life almost certainly share that view.

And yet, sometimes the assignation of greater meaning based on performance and outcomes in sport should be held in check.

Athletes Character Code sets expectations for athlete behavior
As an administrator, you can help stem the tide of bullying and other undesirable behavior from your athletes by having them subscribe to the Athletes Character Code, this month’s free download from ASEP. Taken from ASEP’s Coaching Principles course, the code represents a model of behavior that is positive, uplifting, respectful, and necessary to develop teamwork and sportsmanship. Provide a copy of the code to each participant at the beginning of the season, and post it in your locker room to serve as a daily reminder. To access the download - available free of charge through the ASEP website - click on the Free Resources tab located on the ASEP home page. You’ll just need to complete a short form to access the download. And while you’re there, check out the dozens of other resources available to administrators, coaches, officials, and parents through the Free Resources section of the site.
