"Teen's brutal soccer attack earns assault charge," "Father shines laser pointer in goalie’s eyes," "Losing coach bites ear of winning coach." Real headlines pulled from sports pages in just the last few weeks demonstrating the worst in sports. We realize that sensational incidents like this are not the norm. But when they do occur, they serve as reminders of the importance of stressing sportsmanship in sport programs. Sportsmanship doesn’t just happen; it needs to be taught and modeled. A great place to start is with "Guidelines for Teaching Sportsmanship," this month’s free download from ASEP. Taken from the book Sport and Character: Reclaiming the Principles of Sportsmanship, written by Craig Clifford and Randolph Feezell, the download will provide coaches and administrators with a variety of approaches to get players to form the habit of sportsmanship.
