Promote a spirit of sportsmanship in your sports program
"Teen's brutal soccer attack earns assault charge," "Father shines laser pointer in goalie’s eyes," "Losing coach bites ear of winning coach." Real headlines pulled from sports pages in just the last few weeks demonstrating the worst in sports. We realize that sensational incidents like this are not the norm. But when they do occur, they serve as reminders of the importance of stressing sportsmanship in sport programs. Sportsmanship doesn’t just happen; it needs to be taught and modeled.

A great place to start is with "Guidelines for Teaching Sportsmanship," this month’s free download from ASEP. Taken from the book Sport and Character: Reclaiming the Principles of Sportsmanship, written by Craig Clifford and Randolph Feezell, the download will provide coaches and administrators with a variety of approaches to get players to form the habit of sportsmanship. To access the download - available free of charge through the ASEP website - click on the Free Resources tab located on the ASEP home page. You’ll just need to complete a short form to access the download. And while you’re there, check out the dozens of other resources available to administrators, coaches, officials, and parents through the Free Resources section of the site.

The NCAA recently approved legislation which has greatly increased academic standards for NCAA freshman eligibility. Higher SAT/ACT score requirements, higher minimum core GPA requirements, and new core requirements are just a few of the updates discussed by webinar presenter Dan Eassa of the Recruiting Education Foundation, Tampa, Florida, and www.FreeRecruitingWebinar.org. We encourage coaches, athletic directors, student-athletes, and parents to view this free recorded webinar to learn about the college recruiting process and academic eligibility in light of these new standards.

Making sense of the hydration hype for improved performance
In Waterlogged: The Serious Problem of Overhydration in Endurance Sports, Dr. Tim Noakes examines widely applied hydration prescriptions for athletes and scrutinizes claims of the sports drink industry that run counter to years of scientific study and can result in the increased incidence of exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH), a condition caused by abnormal fluid retention in those who overdrink during extended exercise. Waterlogged describes the mechanisms of hyponatremia and includes up-to-date hydration guidelines to help improve athletic performance, safeguard endurance athletes from EAH, and replace the general “drink until you can’t take another sip” practices that prevail today.
